Formula & assumptions

Square fees use published rates: US (Square Free) in-person 2.6% + 15¢, online 3.3% + 30¢; AU in-person 1.6%, online 2.2% (sellers signed up from 30 May 2024). Source: squareup.com/us/en/payments/our-fees and squareup.com/au/en/pricing.

Transactions = volume ÷ average ticket. Interchange-plus = volume × (blended interchange % + processor markup %) + transactions × per-transaction fee.

Assumptions you control: blended interchange (default 1.9% US is a rough mixed debit/credit card-present estimate; AU interchange is far lower, try 0.5–0.8%), markup, software subscription and hardware costs. Toast and Lightspeed do not publish one fixed rate, so enter the numbers from your own quote. Hardware is straight-line amortised over the months you set. Early-termination fees, chargebacks, PCI fees and tax are not included.

If you are inside a Toast term, the cheapest exit is almost always to give non-renewal notice 30+ days before your end date, or to use the section 6.2 rate-increase clause the moment Toast sends a price notice. Leaving mid-term on Pay-as-you-go costs US$150 for every month left, which usually beats any processing saving you were chasing.

How we checked this

Everything below comes from documents Toast publishes, read on 4 November 2026: the Toast Merchant Agreement, the Toast pricing page, the Limited Hardware Warranty and Toast’s support article on renewals. We have not cancelled a Toast account ourselves for this article, and your signed order form overrides anything here. Read it next to this page.

The early termination fee formula (section 8.4)

Section 8.4 says you may terminate at any time, but you stay liable for fees through the termination date, plus:

Your planEarly termination feeAlso owed
Software subscription (e.g. Point of Sale plan)All software subscription fees left in the current termAny software-financing processing fee
Pay-as-you-go (Starter Kit)US$150 × months remainingAny software-financing processing fee

Two exits priced out

Toast’s pricing page lists the Starter Kit from US$0/month and the Point of Sale plan from US$69/month (first terminal; extra devices cost more). Third-party reviewers that read Toast’s checkout in October 2026 report a two-year initial term on both. Take a pizzeria that wants out 10 months into a 24-month term, so 14 months remain:

PlanFormulaETF
Point of Sale, 1 terminal at list price14 × US$69US$966
Pay-as-you-go14 × US$150US$2,100

The Pay-as-you-go figure surprises people: you paid nothing monthly for software, yet the exit fee is more than double. If your order has extra terminals or add-on modules, the subscription ETF grows with every line on it.

The clause that waives the fee (section 6.2)

Software fees are fixed during the initial term. Toast can change card processing rates and other non-software fees at any time on 30 days’ written notice. If the change is to your card processing rates or the POS core tablet subscription fee, you can send written notice before the effective date that you are terminating, and the section 8.4 fee does not apply (the software-financing processing fee still can). If the increase is on another module, the contract lets you drop that module, not the whole agreement. Prepaid amounts are non-refundable either way.

Practical rule: the day a Toast rate notice lands, put the effective date in the calendar and decide within the week. Keep using the service past that date and you are deemed to accept.

Hardware: what “buyout” really means

  • You already own it. The Merchant Agreement passes title at shipment. There is no residual to buy.
  • It is not portable. Toast’s pricing FAQ says its services run only on approved Toast hardware, and other POS vendors do not support Toast terminals. Budget for new hardware at your next provider.
  • Easy Pay is separate debt. Toast Easy Pay hardware financing is repaid by holdbacks from card settlements. Cancelling POS service does not cancel it; ask for the payoff figure in writing.
  • Returns are limited. Toast’s return window does not apply to Pay-as-you-go hardware, per Toast’s hardware terms as summarised by independent reviewers. Warranty is 12 months on handhelds and 24 months on other Toast products.

Is the processing saving worth the exit fee?

Toast’s Starter Kit pages, as read by several reviewers in October 2026, list 3.09% + 15¢ on Pay-as-you-go versus 2.49% + 15¢ on the Point of Sale plan. That 0.60-point gap equals the US$69 fee at US$69 ÷ 0.006 = US$11,500 a month in card sales. Above that, the subscription plan costs less to run. Run your own volume through the calculator above, then compare the monthly saving at a new processor with the ETF:

Monthly saving at new providerMonths to recover a US$2,100 ETF
US$10021
US$2508.4
US$5004.2

Add new hardware to that sum. If recovery takes longer than the months left on your term, wait and give non-renewal notice.

Exit checklist

  1. Find your order form: start date, term length, every terminal and module line.
  2. Diary the non-renewal deadline: 30 days before term end, in writing to the notice address in section 14, then complete Toast’s cancellation process.
  3. Ask Toast for a written payoff: ETF, financing fees, Easy Pay balance, effective date.
  4. Export menus, item-level sales and guest data before the cut-off.
  5. If you are moving to Square, read our Square vs Toast modifier comparison and the offline card mode comparison before you order hardware.

FAQ

How much is the Toast early termination fee?+

Under section 8.4 of Toast's published Merchant Agreement, the fee is the software subscription fees remaining for the rest of the current term. On a Pay-as-you-go subscription it is US$150 multiplied by the months remaining. Either way you also owe any processing fee tied to software financing.

Can I cancel Toast without paying the early termination fee?+

Section 6.2 lets you terminate without the section 8.4 fee if Toast raises your card processing rates or the fee for its monthly POS core tablet subscription and you give written notice before the increase takes effect. The software-financing processing fee can still apply, and prepaid amounts are not refunded.

Do I have to give Toast hardware back when I cancel?+

No. The Merchant Agreement says title to hardware Toast ships passes to you at shipment. But the hardware only runs Toast software, and any Toast Easy Pay balance stays due after you cancel, so get a written payoff before you switch.

Does a Toast contract auto-renew?+

Yes. Toast's support documentation says the order and Merchant Agreement renew for successive one-year periods after the initial term, with no month-to-month option, unless you give at least 30 days' written notice before the term ends and complete the cancellation process.
